Food Webs and Food Chains

Today was our first day of Springwood Scientists. We learned our rules and expectations, and did a few activities regarding the food webs and food chains. We talked about the difference between the two. We made Interactive Food Chains on the web to see how energy can be transferred from one plant or animal to another.

Next we were all assigned an animal or plant. The plants and animals were on cards we hung around our necks like necklaces. We sat in a circle and we threw yarn to one another. We started with our first animal, a fish, and looked for other plants or animals in the circle that would either eat the fish or that the fish would eat. We decided a duck would eat the fish. So, the person with the fish around his/her neck held a piece of yarn and then threw the ball of yarn to the person with the duck. We continued this until we had created one giant food web. We realized a food web has no beginning or end to it and we were able to pick out different food chains within the food web.

Here are a few illustrations to help you remember the difference between a food web and a food chain!

Next week we will become "lunatics" as we learn all about eclipses and moon phases!
